Colin Kaepernick, (born November 3, 1987)
Football Player & Activist
Kaepernick began his career as a backup to Alex Smith, but became the 49ers' starter in the middle of the 2012 season. That season he went on to lead the 49ers to their first Super Bowl appearance since 1994, losing to the Baltimore Ravens. During the 2013 season, Kaepernick helped the 49ers reach the NFC Championship, losing to the Seattle Seahawks. In the following seasons, Kaepernick lost and won back his starting job.
Last year, in response to the continued violence and marginalization of people of color across the United States, Kaepernick, took a seat for justice -- literally sitting down during his team's pre-game national anthems. His courageous stance earned him many admirers and encouraged other NFL players (and athletes beyond the NFL) to join him, but it also caused friction amidst his teammates and others who disagreed with his stance. Reportedly, Kaepernick received death threats and was black-balled by other teams when his contract with the 49ers was up. He has made good use of his time off -- using his fortune and voice to support men coming out of the criminal justice system, those starving in Somalia, the Meals on Wheels program, and other social justice groups including Black Lives Matter.
It's uncertain what the future holds for Kaepernick -- what is certain is that his willingness to sit down for justice has positively influenced the conversation about racial justice and equal rights.
